QUESTIONS OFTEN ASKED BY PRINT COLLECTORS
What is a limited edition?
As indicated by it’s name, a limited edition refers to an image that is printed with a defined number of copies. Our policy is that once a number of copies of an image have been declared, and then no more can be published in other sizes or under some other edition name, thereby, truly assuring the collector that the original number of copies of the image will be honored.
What is the difference between an artist proof and a regular edition?
When the number of copies to be reproduced is determined, an additional (in our case 10%) are declared and designated as the artist proof edition. Many collectors favor the AP as it is of lower numbers and by tradition is considered to be of higher value. In our case, the image and quality of the reproduction are the same.
What is a lithograph?
A lithograph is printed on paper using an offset printing press. They are printed in large batches and the cost per print is very economical compared to other processes.
What is a Giclee?
Sometimes referred to an iris prints, giclees are produced using a digital process similar to inkjet printing.
Can a size other than listed be ordered?
Our policy is without exception to adhere to the size of edition and reproduction dimensions as declared upon the original certificate of authenticity. We believe any changes made to an edition after initial purchases have been made by collectors are not appropriate.
If an edition is marked sold out can we still special ordered?
No, the only source would be on the secondary market of one of our dealers that may have one on hand.
What is an open edition?
Open editions can be printed in unlimited numbers.
Do you ever issue open editions?
We do not serve the open edition market. This helps prevent the issues of unauthorized reproduction, and unlawful distribution of our images.
Can I buy a canvas transfer (a litho that has been transferred to canvas)?
We do not make canvas transfers from the lithograph reproductions. On most images we do print a giclee on canvas in lieu of a canvas transfer. We have honored the original declarations on the size of addition and substituted the giclee technology. Pricing was adjusted accordingly.
Is there a difference in quality of canvas substrates and if so, how do I know what I am buying?
Canvases vary substantially in pricing depending upon quality. Some low quality canvas giclees can have issues with cracking and splitting. Our canvases are the best quality that can be obtained.
Is there a difference in quality of paper if so, how do I find out what I am buying?
Grades of paper vary over a wide range. Our lithographs were originally printed on a paper specified by Toh-A-Tin or Somerset Publishing at a time when they were responsible for quality control. All giclee prints produced under our specifications are printed on archival cold-press watercolor paper, which was selected because it is the highest quality available and also produces the matte finish which best enhances the art.
Is there a difference in quality of inks if so, how do I find out what I am buying?
The quality is dependent upon the selection by the printer/publisher. We depend upon the recommendations of the Epson labs in that their recommendations are being followed. Instead of inks (which are much less costly), our resin based pigment product is used in conjunction with the recommended canvas.
How soon can the print be shipped?
Normally, we can ship within three working days unless there is a special circumstance. Any unforeseen delay is always posted on the website.
What are the options for shipping paper?
Generally it is shipped flat. If desired it will be enclosed in an envelope which can be used for preservation and presentation. They can also be rolled in a tube but will require proper care when unrolling to allow the “set” in the paper to relax.
What are the options for shipping canvases?
Canvases are always shipped rolled.
How do I get the paper reproduction framed?
You can simply use your local framer of choice and select the frame and matte that matches your dècor.
How do I get the canvas framed?
The canvas will need to be stretched or dry mounted and fit to any frame of choice by your local framer.
Are the canvases UV coated?
The canvas and resin pigments are not to be coated with a UV spray. The Epson labs have developed the canvas & resin system and any spray will void their warranty. By using the combination of canvas and resin, the giclee retains the artistic benefit of a matte finish which is richer and less reflective.
What are the advantages of canvas vs. paper?
- Not under glass so cost is less and less reflection.
- Saves the cost of matting unless prefer matte.
- Framing cost is the same except need to add cost of stretcher bars.
Which is less costly to have framed, canvas or paper?
Since canvas only needs to be stretched and framed it should generally be the most economical.
What size considerations should I have in ordering?
Generally a 3″ to 4″ frame for canvas and the same plus 2 ″ or more for mats on a paper print. So use the image dimension and the double the total width from edge of image to exterior side of frame.
Do you ever do gallery wraps and if so how do I order?
We recommend framing the piece, as gallery wraps are generally used for lower quality reproductions.
When will a new image be made available?
We only select work that we feel is well suited to reproduction. Not all originals are reproduced.
What is a certificate of authenticity?
The certificate warrants the information provided on a certificate of authenticity.
What is a signed print vs. a hand signed print.
A signed print maybe either autopen signed or a signature printed on the reproduction. A collector needs to be aware that the practice became more prevalent with the advent of Giclee prints as since the prints were produced upon order it became more efficient and economic not to pre-print, send to artist for signature and wait for the return. The use of reproduced signatures vs. a reproduction actually signed by the artist is becoming a significant issue for consumers. It is one of several reasons that giclee printing by artists is becoming more prevalent.
If a print is signed advertised as signed is it necessarily hand signed?
Not necessarily, as some prints are being produced using autopen or signature images that appear “signed” but are not “hand signed”. It requires a detail examination to verify a print has been actually signed by the artist. Of course, the hand signed reproduction has a much greater value attached to it.
Once an image used and the size of the edition is announced, do you ever use the image again in another issue?
As a policy, an image will never be reproduced in any other size or under another edition name after the original certification or authenticity is created. We believe that doing so creates unfairness to the consumers that relied upon the original certificate as to the use of the image.
What is the difference in value of a limited edition and an open edition?
Much of value is related to the quality of the work and the artist reputation. All of these things being equal, it is usually the case that the limited edition print is significantly more desirable.
What are best practices for care of reproductions?
Exposure to the elements is damaging to all art. Most deterioration results from exposure to direct sunlight and/or moisture. Direct sunlight has an effect on all pigments over time. Therefore, one should keep all art no matter what out of direct sunlight and in a humidity friendly environment.
What is an iris print?
It is another name for a giclee.
